Mission Statement

The mission of the Tennessee Quality Milk Laboratory is to meet the needs of the dairy industry through diagnostic services, educational resources and ongoing research. The Tennessee Quality Milk Laboratory will provide dairy producers, veterinarians, and the dairy industry with current science-based methods and technologies to improve dairy product quality and safety.

Vision Statement

The vision of the Tennessee Quality Milk Laboratory is to be recognized as an innovative resource for information pertaining to milk quality and dairy product safety.

The Tennessee Quality Milk Laboratory wants to assist dairy producers, veterinarians, milk buyers, milk processors, dairy consultants and other members of the agri industries serving the dairy industry in achieving greater profitability through higher milk quality and improved herd health.

The quality of milk has been and continues to be a topic of interest to dairy producers, milk buyers, milk processors, retail outlets, and consumers. Production of maximum quantities of high quality milk is an important goal of every dairy operation. On the other hand, production of poor quality milk affects all segments of the dairy industry, ultimately resulting in milk with decreased manufacturing properties and dairy products with a reduced shelf life.

The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and the Department of Animal Science are proud to announce the launching of the Tennessee Quality Milk Laboratory. The Tennessee Quality Milk Laboratory is a fee-for-services laboratory offering a wide variety of diagnostic microbiological analyses to enhance the quality of milk produced in Tennessee and the Southern Region. Services offered will be available to dairy producers, veterinarians, milk buyers, milk processors, dairy consultants and other members of the agri industries serving the dairy industry. The Tennessee Quality Milk Laboratory will be under the direction of Dr. Stephen P. Oliver and his research staff, who are nationally and internationally recognized mastitis and dairy food safety researchers.
